These are hotels first. Each has rooms, restaurants, a spa or a theatre or a marina, and a gaming floor that occupies part of the property alongside everything else. We describe them the way we describe any other hotel here: where the building sits, what the setting gives it, and what a guest actually encounters. The property occupies the former French and Quebec pavilions from Expo 67 on Île Notre-Dame, a few minutes from downtown across the water. As a hotel it trades on that setting — parkland, river, the old exposition grounds — and on an architecture that no purpose-built resort would have produced: stacked, angular, glassy in a very particular late-sixties way. Restaurants range from casual to formal, and there is a cabaret-style venue for shows. The gaming floor is one of several things happening inside the building rather than the organising principle of a visit.

Fallsview Casino Resort
Niagara Falls, Ontario
Built into the escarpment above the Niagara gorge, Fallsview earns its name honestly: a substantial share of rooms and public spaces look directly at the falls, and the hotel is organised around that view. It functions as a full resort — spa, indoor pool, a theatre that books touring acts, and a spread of restaurants at several price points — with a gaming floor on the lower levels. Walkways connect it to the tourist district above the gorge, so guests can leave the property on foot, which not every hotel of this size allows.

River Rock Casino Resort

River Rock sits on the Fraser River in Richmond, with a marina at its edge and the Vancouver airport close enough that the hotel is a common first and last night for travellers. The buildings are low and spread out along the water, and the riverfront walk is the best thing about the site. Inside there is a theatre used for concerts and comedy, a range of restaurants leaning toward the region's Chinese and Pacific Northwest cooking, and a gaming floor. Transit into central Vancouver runs from a station a short walk away.

Casino Rama Resort
Rama, Ontario
Casino Rama stands on the Chippewas of Rama First Nation's land near Lake Couchiching, about ninety minutes north of Toronto, and the community's ownership shapes how the property presents itself — cultural references run through the public spaces rather than being confined to a display case. The hotel side is a resort in the ordinary sense: several hundred rooms, a spa, a spread of restaurants, and an entertainment centre that has hosted large touring acts for decades. Cottage country begins immediately outside, which is why many stays here are two nights rather than one.
